Can Final Cut Express 4 handle/edit with AVCHD?

Postby senior90 » Sat Nov 06, 2010 2:15 am

I've heard that on Adobe CS5, AVCHD is a bit of a problem to edit with, and I've been looking at a new camcorder that's to be released maybe this winter, but I heard it uses the codec AVCHD, and as soon as I read that, I immediately had some doubts about this camcorder, as I've heard even for some semi-pros* using Adobe CS5 on a custom built PC that it's a problem, so I don't want to spend all this money on a camera that the codec doesn't work very well using Final Cut Express 4, it will most likely work very well using Sony Vegas, but I already have FCE4.

So does anyone have any problems with it? Does anyone know there are problems that can be solved? Does it work perfectly? Can it depend on the specs of my iMac? These seem like a few questions in one, but I only need maybe two answers.

*Semi-pro, as in, professional video, but not actually on TV, but making money on a website, trying to get on TV. Professional hasn't got a proper definition it seems.

Can Final Cut Express 4 handle/edit with AVCHD?

Postby currito » Sat Nov 06, 2010 2:17 am

Final Cut Express 4 running on the 24" iMac i bought last year works fine. At least the Canon HF S100 I used worked fine.

Connect camcorder USB to computer USB, camera in play mode and PC mode, launch FCE, under File select Log & Capture.

Other option is to use a card reader and a transcoder like MPEGStreamclip (Squared5) and convert the MTS files into h.264 MOV files before bringing them into FC...
