Can you use Skype Video calls on 3 (Three) UK Mobile Network?

Postby briant67 » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:34 am

My last question nobody could answer so try again from a different tack.

I want to make video calls from either a laptop at work using a 3 mobile broadband dongle, or a Android mobile phone to my home where my wife has an iMac.

On an 'Eat-As-Much-As-Can' data plan on '3' does it allow the Skype video calling application for Android mobiles for example as some UK networks like T-Mobile block VOIP calls and have caps on data speed at 380kbit/s and a Skype call is estimated to need 600 kbit/s. I have a 3g+ HDSPA signal.

Tethering is also barred from some UK networks such as T-Mobile, is this the case with '3'?

If using a '3' premium mobile broadband dongle with say 15gb per month, are you allowed to make Skype Video Calls using your laptop's Skype program.

Thanks for any help!!

Can you use Skype Video calls on 3 (Three) UK Mobile Network?

I have just installed Skype on my 3 mobile (UK) Samsung Galaxy S (firmware 2.3.3 gingerbread android).

When I tried installing the Skype app from 3 mobile, it only gave me 2 options - Skype call or send IM, so I tried installing the latest Skype app from the android market (version 2.5.0.108) which now gives me the Skype video call option as well. According to the Three mobile site I should only be using their app otherwise I will be incurring extra charges. I'm not sure if this means 'using up my data allowance' or being charged for data not covered by my contract, since I'm also on the 'all you can eat' data plan.

So far I've only made a couple of video calls from my mobile but my account doesn't show any extra charges. Has anyone else tried this?

Yes, as long as you don't go over 15gb in one month (that would take a lot of skyping or whatever else you usse the internet for).
