Go to the top left hand side of the window. Click the apple icon and click "About this Mac..." and make sure you have an Intel processor. If the window says you have a PowerPC processor then you cannot upgrade. Snow Leopard (10.6) requires an Intel processor, it will not run on a Power PC Mac.
If your Mac is Intel based you can upgrade. The cost of Snow Leopard is only $29, its really inexpensive. If you think $29 is too much for an OS then there are bigger problems afoot. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MAC_OS_X_SNGL
ANY retail Snow Leopard will install, even though it says "upgrade" it is the entire OS. All you need to do is wipe your computer with the install disk and install the system like normal. The $29 disk will work on your computer. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/08/27/apples_snow_leopard_disc_will_install_on_tiger_macs.html
