How do I get my iMac running again after hard drive failure?

First my CD drive stopped working, and I lived with that for awhile. Then my hard drive crashed, so I had it replaced. I purchased an external CD reader. My question is how do I get my iMac running again? Do I put the OS CD in the drive and connect it to my computer? Will my Mac "know" to boot from the disk?

If you have correctly installed your hard drive, but doesn't have an OS on it, yes start the computer with the disk in and it should auto-read the disk for setup, if not there is usually a button like f9 in the beginning you can press to boot from the disk
