How do I open files recovered from a Mac hard drive?

I have an iMac that crashed and the hard disk was replaced. I have the old drive and when I connected it to my laptop (running Windows and Ubuntu) I could see all the files on the drive, but could not access the ones in my old home folder. I can't copy or move them either. Help me?

Plug it into a machine running Mac OS.
