My mac is freezing up and beeping?

Postby tyla12 » Sat Oct 01, 2011 9:09 pm

So, I'm at my computer, using the internet. (I own an imac)

Suddenly, the screen freezes up and this loud beeping sound comes on! This is the second time this has happened today, anyone know what's going on?

The beeps are pretty loud and come in groups of 3, with a short pause in between every 3 beeps.

• 1 beep = No RAM installed/detected
• 2 beeps = Incompatible RAM type installed
• 3 beeps = No RAM banks passed memory testing
• 4 beeps = No good boot images in the boot ROM
• 5 beeps = Bad ROM boot block or processor is not usable

If you have any extra new RAM modules, try swapping them out with the installed ones. If not, I would suggest taking your Mac to a certified Apple Service Provider to make sure it's not a deeper problem.

In the Finder menu bar, click Go > Utilities, then open Disk Utility. Select your hard drive (should be the first item listed in the left sidebar). Select your Macintosh HD partition (or similar name) and click Verify Disk. This will check for any errors in the system.

If it says your disk needs to be repaired, insert your Mac OS X install DVD, then reboot. When the computer turns on, immediately hold down the C key to boot from the DVD drive. When you enter the Installer, go to Utilities > Disk Utility in the menu bar, click your Macintosh HD partition and then click Repair Disk.

If this doesn't work, back up your data and reinstall Mac OS X.

Please feel real to email me with questions (link on my profile).
