Speedtest.net says 1.93 Mbs I get 170Kbs in Chrome, somethings wrong?

Postby parnel45 » Fri Sep 16, 2011 8:34 pm

Again another question about my really rather useless internet, but i have done another test and i'm up to 1.93Mb which seems great for my area, but i still only get around 170kbs when actually downloading something in chrome, like iTunes update for example

I'm on a Mac, don't know if that changes anything, and have my Bt HomeHub in the room next to the one my iMac is in, so its not a distance from the router issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It depends on line traffic and how busy the servers are. Every person does not have their own line direct to the sites browsed, we have to share and a lines capacity is finite. Therefore it is like getting a whole school of kids out of 1 door. 1 kid can run through, 10 kids will have to adjust their speed and route through. A 1000 kids will be bottlenecked and some will pass through different doors, taking a different route. That is exactly how your internet works. It is also the reason that most ISP's restrict downloads at peak times or charge much more for a server with greater capacity. Try your speed test at 3.00 in the morning and you will see much better speeds.

I test at 16-22mbps on average, but I get only 1-2mbps download speed. Its normal for the d/l speed to be lower.
