It will read a music cd but if i put in a software cd or something it won't read it. Is there a setting or something i have to change so that it will read it?

If it can read a music CD, then it should be able to read a software installation CD.

UNLESS the CD is for a software app that's NOT for a Mac. Are you sure that the software you're tying to install is a Mac-compatible version?
