Can you get wifi on an airplane?

in about a month, my dad and I are flying to Paris. I was just wondering if I will be able to connect to wifi with my phone, iPad or laptop. my phone has personal hotspot, but I know phones have to be off or in airplane mode. is there any way I will be able to connect to the Internet while in flight? 8 hours is a long time to be on a plane :P

Certain airlines do have WiFi in flight. Some charge for this service however. Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Virgin Airlines advertise this service just to name a few.

I'm flying to Amsterdam in about a month or so...

I'm flying with Delta. Apparently, they do have Wi-Fi on the plane that I'm flying. They said that if your flight is more than 3 hours, it is worth it. I said I was flying international, and they said it was fine. So I'm guessing that it will work for the entire trip? I've never done it before.

I usually hate sitting on my butt for more than 2 hours. Its obviously more than 2 hours.

I don't mind considering I got it for cheap... Since I live in Houston, it would be like ~$1500. However, I booked two flights. Air Tran to New York. Then New York to Amsterdam. There is more competition in New York for international flights, so they lower the fares.

I saved $700!!! Yes, Its a little inconvenient to switch from LaGuardia to JFK, but its worth it considering the bus transfer is only $12.

It depends on what airline you are on, and also if you want to pay for Wi-Fi service.

No you will not be able to get WiFi. Gogo Internet, the provider used by most if not all of the airlines with internet-equipped aircraft, does not work after a few hundred miles (if that) off the coast of the continental United States. International aircraft, for the most part, are not even equipped with WiFi. For instance only US Airways' Airbus 321s have WiFi. Delta has put it only on their domestic mainline fleet and is working on their regional jets, Southwest does not have it on all their airplanes yet. The main problem is that Gogo uses ground-based equipment whereas to do overseas they would have to use a satellite-based service.
