Does reading ebooks damage your eyes?

Postby hareleah96 » Sat Sep 04, 2010 2:06 pm

I have just bought an iPad and am reading a lot of ebooks on it. I know that watching TV, playing computer games is bad for the eyes because of the screen.. but are even things like reading ebooks and reading news on the web bad for the eyes?

I would be very glad if you could explain me..

Thanks a lot!

If reading on the iPad, then yes; if reading on eInk screen of eBook readers, then no.

There has been many users complaining that if you look into the screen of iPad for reading over an hour, your eyes will get very tired because of the backlight (another common complaint is that the iBookStore of iPad is too unmature at this moment). See an article about this here:

For reading use, I think you should definitely go for the Kindle instead of iPad. I recommend this article review about the Kindle and iPad:

There are huge selection of real books for the Kindle as well, as you can find here:

Finally, Amazon just released a new Kindle and new Kindle DX with 50% better contrast and further price cut. After announced for a few days, the first batch of the new Kindle has already been sold out. Since they prioritize the orders on a first come, first served basis, it's better to place the order as early as possible. I put the link below for you to check out yourself.

Guess it'll help you decide.

Reading things on the screen are similar to computer games and watching tv. That depends. Your eyes will be damaged if you read e-books for a very long period of time without resting for a while. Even reading books for a very long time may be bad for your eyes. That can strain your eyes. In addition to that, the radiation is also quite bad.
But you can prevent that by moderation.

Unfortunately, Yes.
Screen time is the measure - 2 hours a day is the recommended time in front of a screen. Since the iPad is backlit, this also counts as screen time and it puts additional strain on the eye.

Alternative eBook readers which are not backlit, like the kobo eReader, will not have as large an impact on your eyes.

With any close distance viewing like reading, you should take breaks every hour or so.
