How to obtain gems on Dragonvale?

Hi, I'm level ten on Dragonvale (playing on iPad) and have various 'friends' on the game that I regularly gift gems to but I never receive any. Is there another method for obtaining gems? (without purchasing from the markets with real money).

I need ten so I can upgrade my nursery.

My game center username is mgttv

Add friends as many as you can. You will get free gems.

Just add as many friends as possible and gift them gems and hopefully they'll gift back. If you find someone that gifts back, make sure to always gift them a gem so they'll keep gifting back.
