iPad is like a “little computer”. But iPad does not multi-task, you cannot access the iPad’s file system or you may not install your own software.
About iPad:
* There is no ethernet jack, only WiFi and 3G (on select models).
* No USB of FireWire inputs, just the Dock Connector like what’s found on iPods and iPhones.
* At the time of this writing there is no built-in printer support. There are a few apps that add this functionality in a limited manner.
* No built-in camera. It is coming to iPad 2 now.

An iPad does NOT have an external usb port, so you will not be able to plug in your phone, a camera, or a printer. It also doesn't have an actual keyboard, so unless you like typing on touch screens, I would say go for a laptop. Notebook laptops are small and easy to carry, like an iPad, but they have more of the needed features.
