My 8GB iPhone only holds 6.8 GB, why?

well i just got it yesterday ios 5.0.1 and everything, brand new.

I have an 8bg iphone as well and its just because of the pre downloaded things like settings, gps, youtube, itunes, and etc take up space. And they consider it an 8gb because if it is completely empty it can hold 8bg worth of stuff. (But I dont think that they can be completely empty)
