Can you cancel your cell phone contract if your service is bad?

I recently moved to a new place and since I've been here my service has been terrible. I have more drop calls in one week than I had ever had in my old place. I have an iPhone 4 and it worked well, but now I can only make a call in certain locations. For example, I cannot make a phone call from my bedroom or in most places in my apartment. I would have to walk outside (in the rain and/or cold if need be) to have at least four bars so I can be sure the call wont drop. In the laundry area of my apartment I can get three bars but the call will fade out and sometimes drop all together. Also I have to sometimes turn my phone all the way off to receive text messages that were sent to me. I have never dropped my phone without the case on it (Otterbox Defender). I have a back up prepaid phone that I use in case I need to make important calls that I dont want to drop.
I read somewhere that it is easier to end a marriage than a cell phone contract.
Im basically just using my iPhone as an iTouch, and pay the bill because I am under contract. But should I have to pay for minutes I don't and cant use.
