No it is not still running. When you hit the home button the app closes.
Do you go on the internet a lot? That could be what does it.
My i phone needs to be charged every 3 days. You may call that a short life, but thats just the way the phone is.
Why not just plug it in to charge every night when you go to sleep.

How to close apps on iPhone 3G?

even if you hit home the apps are still using some ram to run so all you need to do is when you want to quit an app you dont push home, you hold down the power button until you get "slide to power off" dont slide it, hold down the home button until the app closes, the "slide to power off" closes and the iPhone goes back to the springboard. do this to all the apps you hardly ever use so then they dont eat up ram and battery life.

hope this helps
