What is the difference between cellular data and 3G?

I just got an iPhone last week and I need to watch my data usage
I turned off 3G But I can still access the internet with cellular data.
whats is the difference between the two?

Also how do I check how much data I have used?

cellular data = 3G, Edge and GPRS. the reason there's an off/on switch for 3G in the settings is becos 3G consumes a lot of battery so you have the option of turning it off when not in use. just becos 3G is off does not mean cellular data is, however. if 3G is off edge/gprs will still work. the phone defaults to edge when 3g is unavailable and to gprs if edge is not available. 3G is fastest, followed by Edge, then GPRS.

you can check how much data you've consumed by going to settings > general > usage > scroll down to cellular network data.
