Open iTunes while holding down the Shift key. It will allow you to choose another library, e.g. your old one. You just need to know where it is located on your hard drive. The default path can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451

(On a Mac, it would be the Alt key instead of the Shift key.)

Whatever you do don't sync as your ipod will end up blank too. Whereabouts on your computer is your music stored? Do a search for *.mp3 and see what folder comes up. If it definitely contains all of your music then you will have to add it again to this new library (File add folder).

This is why you don't get an iPod. As far as I know you can't get it back. As long as you don't sync it with the PC though you shouldn't lose your music on the iPod.
