Do psychiatric wards have internet?

I have a friend that tried to kill herself, she overdosed on 30 some pills or so. Thankfully she survived and is apparently in the psychiatric ward of a hospital somewhere in Columbus Ohio. She txted me from an ipod though and then i had a chat with her online so I'm curious do psychiatric wards allow this?

Do psychiatric wards have internet?

Yes some do. However you must get staff & doctor approval to access it. Many psychiatric units in hospitals around the United States allow this. It depends on the specific rules of that paticular hospital. If you have concerns about this, you could contact the hospital she is at and verify this. It however, is unusual that she contacted you by a cell phone, as those are not permitted on the wards. Your friend could be getting unathorized access to a phone by someone who may not have her best interest in mind. Please follow up on this to ensure your friends safety.

No they do not. I am quite surprised that she was allowed to text you from the ward. They usually place all things such as cell phones, ipods, etc. If this psychiatric ward does not allow such (of which I am sure that they don't) you may have to resort seeing her at the time visitors are allowed.

The only reason I have this information is the fact that I have been hospitalized in a psychiatric ward for depression which caused me to attempt suicide.

It may be far more therapeutical to see her in person rather than texting her in the long run.

Not all psychiatric wards are the same. I know of some where you are only allowed a five minute phone call a day to family, girls aren't allowed to wear makeup, alcohol in products cannot be within the first three listed ingredients, and all electronics are taken away. Also, there are different levels of privileges. For example, there might be a youth floor and then a youth enhanced floor. The youth enhanced would be much stricter, security cameras in the room, people watching a patient 24/7.

Basically it all depends on the ward. It might be best to refrain from communicating with her at this time so she can focus on getting a better perspective on life, but I have been hospitalized before and it's pretty crazy and my then boyfriend, now husband, kept me from losing what little I sanity I had left. If you get a chance, tell her to stay strong and to hang in there. Even though it doesn't feel like it...things are going to be okay. It just might take a while.
