What does"restoring your ipod" mean?

Restoring your ipod means restoring it back to the settings you had when it was first manufactured. For example, no songs and videos and playlists will remain on it. All settings such as brightness of LCD and font size will go to default.
This helps if there is some problem on your ipod! as long as you have your data on itunes you can put it on the ipod again!

many people mis-use the term 'restore' as this is a windows function to return the os to a previous, working state. i doubt ipod has the same program, but recovery (factory recovery) takes the item back to the way it was out of th ebox, probably is what is meant here...

it deletes all files on the iPod. it basically returns it to the way that it was before it was opened...the way it was when first produced at the factory

It means restoring to factory settings, meaning it will erase all your music and set your personal settings to it's original form.

It "restores" it back to its original factory settings (how it came when it was new). People often do this to fix a glitch or issue on their iPod.
