Sure.

The fastest quad-core processor as of today is the i7-2600K. It's 320 dollars.

The fastest 6-core processor as of today is the i7-990X, and if you want dual processors it's the X5680 (i7-990X is faster by 133MHz). The 990X is 1000 dollars, and the X5680 is $1900.

2600K is faster than the 990X in almost every benchmark, except ones that use all 6 cores.
So I'd get that (actually, I'd suggest the i5-2500K since that's almost as fast and 100 bucks less).

Fastest stock processors for single CPU systems:
- Xeon E3-1290 - 3.6GHz, 4-cores, basically a faster Core i7 2600 with ECC memory support.
- Core i7 990X (will be replaced very soon by the 995X @ 3.6GHz) or Xeon W3690 - 3.46GHz, 6-cores.

Fastest stock processors for dual CPU systems:
- Xeon X5687 - 3.6GHz, 4-core
- Xeon X5690 - 3.46GHz, 6-core

Best buys are the 2500K, 2600K or Core i7 980 ($600 for a 3.33GHz 6-core).

Anything above a 2500/K is really only useful for bragging rights, benchmarking competitions or if you are earning from the system and 10% extra performance means you can take on more work. You shouldn't sacrifice on memory, SSDs or graphics cards to get a better processor.
