How to get money together to buy a Mac as a student?

Postby hagley » Sun Jan 16, 2011 12:45 am

I'm currently studding Computing and Applied IT in college and I plan (grades providing) to go to uni to study computer science or networking.

As you can imagine on the top of my "I'd love to have list" is a Macintosh and I think that I should probably start getting money together so I can have a nice Mac on my desk when I start uni.

Being a student I have little to no income, I will ask for money for my birthday and christmas (my family aren't particularly affluent, I'm not expecting more than £100). I am currently trying to get a job.

Any ideas as to how to get funds to get the new computer? And which Mac would you advise I get?

I will need portability so really I'm looking at the 13/ 15" Mac Pro or the 13" Mac air, but to be honest by the time I have the money I may as well wait for the next hardware update (and Lion) before I buy.

No Apple haters please, I'm a Linux or Mac OS user, I don't have time for any Microsoft boxes!

if your gonna get a mac, and want portability, you shouldn't really consider the 15 inch. I have one and it's pretty heavy. the air of course is light but the 13 inch was pretty light and feels waay lighter than the 15 inch even though it's just about 50 grams difference. and you can get student discount for macs but it's only if your a uni student or you got accepted to a uni. I don't know what the terms and conditions are in britain but that's how it is in japan and us
